Why UK-imported Cadburys chocolate tastes better than US-made

There’s an impostor in our midst!

You venture to the supermarket for the first time after moving to the US and see the comforting sight of Cadbury’s Dairy Milk. Eagerly you put it in your basket and sneak a cheeky square in the car park…but it’s somehow feels wrong. Here’s why:

  • Packaging. US Cadburys is in a shiner and glitzier foil wrapper. Totally unsurprising and stereotypical difference. Don’t @ me on that one.
  • Shape. US bars are flatter, UK bars have a rounded smooth top to each square. Anyone telling me shape doesn’t impact taste has never eaten a Pringle.
  • Ingredients. Aha! The killer point. US bars can only have cocoa butter as fat to comply with FDA regulations. UK bars contain a mixture of cocoa butter and vegetable oils which lead to a creamier and less bitter taste. All other ingredients are the same.

So think twice before you reach for those mini-eggs in CVS!

If anyone wants to do the same research on Guinness tasting better in Dublin and bagels tasting better in New York, I’m here for it.
